Theories of Time: Is Time Travel Possible?
Dr. Ned Markosian discusses the logical possibility of time travel to the past using the two leading philosophical theories about the nature of time: (1) The Static Theory of Time (where, contrary to appearances, time does not actually objectively “flow” at all) and (2) The Dynamic Theory of Time (where time does in fact objectively “flow”, as we ordinary think). Markosian argues that time travel to the past is rendered metaphysically impossible on the dynamic conception of time. He then goes on to provide an answer to the question regarding what people would actually be thinking ABOUT on such a dynamic view (which he thinks is right), where such time travel to the past isn’t even a possibility which can be coherently conceived.
